And I say, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest; yes, I would wander far away; I would lodge in the wilderness; Selah. Psalm 55:6-7 - We learn from the psalm that David is once again in a season of great distress. The reasoning for such distress was because a close friend of his had turned on him and was behaving like his enemy. We aren’t given the exact situation this psalm is speaking of, and we may not even have this story of David recorded for us in scripture, but the desire of David is clear. He wanted out. He wanted to sprout wings, fly off into the wilderness, and enjoy the peaceful life he used to exist in within the sheep fields. Yet that was not God’s plan and not what God did for David, for he had to endure and remain in that heavy season. We too may find ourselves dreaming for wings to fly out of the difficult season we’re in and back into a more peaceful one. All we want is out of this hardship and finally past it, but like with David, that may not be God’s plan. You may have to remain in that hard time longer than you ever expected. While that can be frustrating and even confusing, take peace know you’re not alone in being told no to your “escape wings.” David wasn’t given the wings he prayed for. Even Jesus Himself didn’t get wings to fly away from the punishment of the cross but faithfully did the Father’s will. Having to remain in a season that we’d prefer to fly away from is a common theme we see in scripture, but see how each time God provided for His people. Often we also see the beautiful results of His people remaining in those seasons. So when you receive the no to your wings remember you’re not alone in hearing that answer, God will be with you through this, and God can make something wonderful as the result of remaining in this season.
