These things you have done, and I have been silent; you thought that I was one like yourself. But now I rebuke you and lay the charge before you. Psalm 50:21 – In this portion of the psalm, the Lord is directing His words toward the wicked among His people. For a time they had found themselves deep within their sinfulness, rejecting God’s words and casting them behind them as if they meant nothing. They enjoyed the company of evildoers and spoke vile things about others. Yet, what is most interesting, is they had begun to believe that God felt the same way about sin as they did. That God was one of them, one of the boys, and didn’t take sinful seriously. Now why would these people come to such a conclusion? Because God had been silent on their sin for a while. God hadn’t brought any punishment yet over the sin and was silent over the ways they were living, so they assumed God must not have any issues with their lifestyle of sin. Such mindsets can fall over us too in our world today. We see sin running rampant, yet no consequences seem to follow. We see the same silence from the Lord that those in the psalm saw over sinfulness in the world. Does that mean God really isn’t serious about sin? Not at all, it simple means we serve a God who is patient with us and doesn’t condemn us immediately like we deserve. God’s silence over sin is God’s space being given for people to repent and turn from their sin. For we even see in our verse above, God didn’t forever remain silent. Charges against their sin came and the wrath followed. Such will be the case for every person who doesn’t turn away from their sin. Thankfully the Lord’s longsuffering is at play in our story and He blesses us with space to repent of our sin. Today then is the day to turn from your sin. The lack of consequences so far is not God’s approval, its God’s grace at play giving you time to repent. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 3005
