Send out your light and your truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling! Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy, and I will praise you with the lyre, O God, my God. Psalm 43:3-4 – This psalm is an extension of the previous psalm, likely written at a later date to add onto the depths of difficulty found in Psalm 42. Here the psalmist is pleading with the Lord and then sharing what He’ll do once God provides. He asks for God’s light and truth to be sent to him. He needed God’s light to cast out the darkness surrounding him and for God’s truth to establish solid ground for him to stand and walk on. He declared that he needed those two things and he was willing to submit to God’s leadership in his life. He desired to be led to God’s dwelling place once again and be close with the Lord. When that all took place, the psalmist even told the Lord that his response would be praise, sacrifice, and worship. Like the psalmist, we too can find ourselves asking for the Lord to get us out of our pit, but are we also declaring the other things the psalmist says in this passage? That we want out of the pit so we can be near the Lord? That our plan is to praise, sacrifice, and worship the Lord in and after the pit? Or are we simply tired of this pit and want out only to return to the things that aren’t pleasing to the Lord? If our “after-pit-plans” aren’t leading us to the Lord, then we may be left in the pit till our plans include such things. God desires us to follow Jesus, the Light and the Truth, and allow Him to bring us to holy communion with the Father. Let your after-pit-plans include following after Jesus.
