Save, O Lord, for the godly one is gone; for the faithful have vanished from among the children of man. Everyone utters lies to his neighbor; with flattering lips and a double heart they speak. Psalm 12:1-2 – We too can find ourselves in the lonely spot David felt he was in within this psalm. David was surrounded by people who were lying about him, gossiping about him, and using their words deceptively against him. When he then looked around for someone that spoke the truth and someone to support him in this ambush of lies he found himself in, he found no one. The godly supporters were gone and all that was left was the wicked men surrounding him who were berating him with their evil words. At this point David had to make a choice. Was he to crumble and let the words of these evil men destroy him, or would he rest in another’s word to find refuge? We see David turned to the pure and perfect words of the Lord. Such words reminded David that God will rise up on behalf of those in need and that He would guard David from such a wicked generation. Now my hope is you never find yourself in a beat down of words from people without any support coming your way from another person. If though you find yourself there, like David you do have a place you can turn. No, maybe no person in that moment is going to have your back or speak up for you or testify to your character, but you can have confidence that the Lord with rise up on your behalf. While those wicked words sting and hit deeply, God’s words are pure and last forever. His words will wash away the deceptive and hateful speech of those around you. When then you find yourself overwhelmed by the words of the world, step into a space of study of the word of the Lord to find the refreshment and relief you need.
