Psalm 5 – Pastor Mac Daily DEVO

Give attention to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to you do I pray. Psalm 5:2 – As I read over this verse a couple unique things stand out to me about David’s prayer. First King David is praying to the real King. While seated on the king’s throne, while surrounded by the king’s palace, while everywhere he would look was the king’s servants and treasures…David knew who was the true King in his story. David may have been the king God placed over Israel, but God was the King of Kings and the King over all the earth. Understanding that ultimate, sovereign role of the Lord was essential for David’s prayer life. Also note who David prayed to. He says to you God do I pray. While that seems like an obvious thing, keep in mind Israel’s struggles with idolatry. For hundreds of years before and after David Isreal submitted themselves to worship of all sorts of false gods. They sacrificed and prayed to gods of stone, silver, and gold. Here though David is making it clear to all those who read this psalm, and also clear to the Lord, who He is calling out to for help and who he is worshiping. Let us today keep in mind who God is and pray only to Him. We may have titles or importance, but God is King over all and we ought to honor Him as such. We may not be tempted to pray to some golden idol, but we may pray in such a away to gain the attention of others or pray even to a false version of God that isn’t the God of scripture. Make sure that you are not praying so you appear a certain way to other people, but your prayers are a conversation between you and your Heavenly Father. God is your King and God is your God, so come and speak with your King and your God freely today. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 2960

Question To Ponder: What might prayer to another “god and king” look like for our culture today?
