One who is full loathes honey, but to one who is hungry everything bitter is sweet. Proverbs 27:7 – Likely we all know it’s a bad idea to go to the grocery store when you’re hungry. Your shopping cart will find itself full of more items than you need all because everything looks tasty to you when you’re hungry! This is the idea of this verse, while honey is sweet at all times, someone who is filled has no desire even for the sweetness of honey. Yet the person who is hungry, anything, even bitter foods sound good to them. On a practical level this makes sense, yet can we see how this resonates with our spiritual life? Jesus is sweeter than honey, always He and what He offers is good and sweet. Yet if we are full of things of this world, even the sweetness that Jesus offers doesn’t sounds good to us. We’ve satisfied our desires with sinful things that we reject the honey, the good things of Jesus. When though we haven’t feed ourselves on the world and all its sinfulness, we have room in our life for what Jesus offers. We are hungry for what He gives, even if sometimes what He gives is hard and difficult, we still long for it because we know what He gives is good for us. Are you then hungry for spiritual things? Do you desire time with Jesus and time with His people? Or are you “full,” not hungry at all for spiritual things and content with where you’re at? Know a heart that is satisfied with this world and has no longing for spiritual things is one that has filled itself with sin. Empty that life of sin, and find a hunger for the sweet honey that Jesus offers. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 2935
