1 Kings – Chapter 6

  • And in the eleventh year, in the month of Bul, which is the eighth month, the house was finished in all its parts, and according to all its specifications. He was seven years in building it. 1 Kings 6:38 – The first temple of the Lord is now finished, and what an undertaking this must have been. This chapter gives us all the details from the size of the temple, to the way it was designed, to even how the sound of tools could not be heard at the temple grounds. Everything was built on costly, hand-cut stones, then covered in the best wood available, then everything was completely overlaid with gold. Even the floors were covered in pure gold. We see in this final verse of the chapter that this wasn’t a quick project either, it took them seven years to finish it. While it took years to complete and it took using the best of the best they had to finish it, such is the work God calls us to. Often we like to think that the task God calls us to accomplish will be quick, easy, and won’t cost us much. Let this chapter reframe your thoughts around the call God has for us. It often isn’t quick, maybe even a lifetime won’t fully complete it. It often isn’t easy, it may even be the hardest thing you’ve ever get to do in this life. It also will often cost us greatly to fulfill the calling God has for us, from time, relationships, to even our life. While it likely will be long, difficult, and costly…it’s also worth it because the Lord is worth it. Hold nothing back, give your all, and allow God to create something amazing through your life that is given over to Him. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 3049

  • 1 Kings 6 Daily DEVO When the house was built, it was with stone prepared at the quarry, so that neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron was heard in the house while it was being built. 1 Kings 6:7 – Could you imagine a construction site today being silent while they work? No sound of machines or tools. Just silence from all that. That’s what we see here when they constructed the temple. Maybe they still spoke to each other, but at least when it came to tools it was silent at the work site.  Why? Out of reverence for God for starters. Also though I believe to make sure God was getting the glory, not them. How often can we let the “noise” of our service to God be loud so it can draw all the attention onto us? Literally with our service saying “look at how holy I am.” God’s not about us getting the glory, it should be all to Him. Let’s seek to imitate this way they built the temple when it comes to our service. Let’s keep the “noise” down so the eyes of those who are around look towards God rather than us. • The floor of the house he overlaid with gold in the inner and outer rooms. 1 Kings 6:30 – This verse is simply a representation of the work that was being done in this chapter. Here we see the first temple of the Lord being built. Truly it’s hard for me to grasp everything happening from just a read through so I’d encourage you to look up a picture online while you’re reading to really appreciate the work done. Solomon took great care in making this temple how God wanted and something worthy of the Lord. Today, we aren’t being asked to built God a temple like this, but we are being called to live a faithful life for Him. As much care as Solomon put into this temple is what we should be putting into our pursuit of Jesus. As we read passages like this we should be in awe at the care given to the work assigned to them and it should inspire us to work hard to. Jesus tells us the harvest is plentiful, let’s do our part well. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 2190
