1 Kings – Chapter 3

  • It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. 1 Kings 3:10 – Here at the beginning of Solomon’s reign we see Solomon choosing the faithful life. He chose to follow in the footsteps of his father David by worshipping the Lord and seeking to live a holy life. As a result of such a pursuit of the Lord, the Lord Himself spoke to Solomon and offered to give Solomon whatever he asked. While maybe not everything was on the table to be given, it seems like if Solomon wanted incredible wealth or the death of an enemy that such things were able to be asked for. Yet, as we see in the chapter, he asked for wisdom so he could properly lead God’s people, and such a request was pleasing to the Lord. When reading this chapter this morning, my thoughts went to the nature of my prayers and requests to the Lord. Are they pleasing to Him? Know we can come to the Lord and pray about anything to Him. He welcomes us to come to Him with our joys in our blessed days and our frustrations in our bad days. We can ask of the Lord anything, but does everything please the Lord when we ask it? Know if we are praying for something that is in line with scripture and in line with His revealed will, then this would be pleasing to Him. Things like asking for wisdom to know how to live faithfully for Him or asking the Lord for an opportunity to share the Gospel today or asking the Lord to help you forgive someone. All things are in line with what the Bible says we should be about, and things I believe the Lord is pleased when we pray such things to Him. Be willing to examine your recent prayer life. Has the requests been more selfish, worldly centered prayers or have then been prayers that are in line with what scripture says to be about? Let’s be pleasing to the Lord, even in our prayers. • 1 Kings 3 Daily DEVO I give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that no other king shall compare with you, all your days.1 Kings 3:13 – When our hearts are leaning into God’s path for us and we are seeking from Him His direction, God’s going to bless us. Now this promise of riches and honor was to Solomon, not us. Yet God’s promise to bless our faithfulness is clearly proclaimed throughout scripture. How that blessing comes and what it will look like is up to God. He though knows our heart and our desires, trust what He brings will be what we are looking for. So today don’t just follow God because you know it equals blessing. Know your faithfulness results in blessing, but pursue God because He is worth pursuing and obeying Him is our way today to show we are thankful. • Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of David his father, only he sacrificed and made offerings at the high places. 1 Kings 3:3 – We learn that Solomon was a very faithful king at this time, only there was one thing that he did that wasn’t faithful: offering at the high places. Making offerings to God at these high places (like mountain tops or hilltops) were convenient places for worship, but places God directed His people to not worship at unless in unique circumstances. Solomon was faithful to the Lord, only there was this one thing. What would be your “only?” Say if someone were describing your faith life they’d say, “They are super faithful, only they….” Only they…let worry over finances dictate their level of trust in God’s provision. Only they…allow the uncomfortableness they feel keep them from sharing the Gospel. Only they…behave differently at church than other places. What would be your “only?” Today take some time to pray about this and see what things may still be keeping you from a full, faithful walk. Notice though God still blessed and used Solomon even with his “only,” but let’s seek to offer God as holy of a servant as we can in us. I love you, but Jesus loves you more – Mac – Daily DEVO 2187
