- At that time Abijah the son of Jeroboam fell sick. And Jeroboam said to his wife, “Arise, and disguise yourself, that it not be known that you are the wife of Jeroboam, and go to Shiloh. Behold, Ahijah the prophet is there, who said of me that I should be king over this people.” 1 Kings 14:1-2 – Jeroboam, king of Israel after the divide of the kingdom, was a horrible, idolatrous king. He lead the entire nation of God’s people away from pursuing the Lord and offered them idols of gold to worship instead. Now, in his time of need due to his son being sick, Jeroboam seeks God’s help. Just like in the previous chapter when his hand was withered, only then did he seek the Lord’s help. Clearly he knew that his idols of gold could do nothing to save him or his family. The idols couldn’t save his hand and the idols could heal his sin, yet only when such things were present in his life did his attention turn to the Lord. God is inviting us today to turn our attention onto Him. Not simply because we need something from Him, but because He’s already done something for us by offering us salvation. We don’t have to wait till we are in a dire place to call upon the Lord, we can call on Him when life is a blessing, and even when life is ordinary. In fact this is God’s desire, that our attention be on Him always, not just when the world is caving in on us and all our idols have proven themselves worthless to help us. Today then turn your gaze onto the Lord. Today may be a dire day, a difficult day, or a delightful day, either way today is the day God invites us to look to Him. - 1 Kings 14 Daily DEVO …and tore the kingdom away from the house of David and gave it to you, and yet you have not been like my servant David, who kept my commandments and followed me with all his heart, doing only that which was right in my eyes. 1 Kings 14:8 – God gives us examples to follow on how to live well for Him. As in this passage the king had the example of David of what a king who follows God looks like. We also have the example of those in scripture to follow. We have the life of Jesus recorded for us to look at. God also blesses us with people more mature and further along in the faith to follow the example of. Use these examples then for your walk. God has asked us to obey Him and given us examples of what that looks like. Knowing this now, who is someone you can follow the example of and how could you today be more like them? - In the fifth year of King Rehoboam, Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem. He took away the treasures of the house of the Lord and the treasures of the king’s house. He took away everything. He also took away all the shields of gold that Solomon had made, and King Rehoboam made in their place shields of bronze, and committed them to the hands of the officers of the guard, who kept the door of the king’s house. 1 Kings 14:25-27 – Bronze instead of gold. Solomon made beautiful gold shields, yet in this attack they were stripped away. Rehoboam then tried in his own power to replace what was taken, but did so with bronze. This was just an outward symbol of how sin had tarnished the kingdom. When we have sin in our story that we aren’t addressing it tarnishes our witness. What would have been shiny gold is bronze instead. God though isn’t desiring from us a bronze life. A life that is His but is still entertaining sin. If you have chosen to be a follower of Jesus, what sins currently are you not addressing? Know it’s alright to struggle with sin still as a follower of Jesus, but when we stop fighting and just let sin have the victory is when we are in the wrong. Through Jesus’ sacrifice we have victory over sin and death. Our life can be holy, golden, for God. Yet only with Jesus can we live such a holy life. Lean into Him and live holy.
